Strategy Development & Execution

For most leaders, the default position is to ’take action’.  And it tends to be reactive, not proactive.  A problem arises, so let’s solve it.  Someone has an idea, so let’s do it. Each quarter, the team dutifully looks at the results and then takes further action. And when they talk strategy, it is usually a list of actions.  If you step back and list all of the actions taken over a period of time, you might find many are putting out bushfires, some were setting up for success and some were ineffective.  But not many of them were connected and in pursuit of a defined strategy.

Strategy is about how you are going to achieve your mission or your goals.  About how you are going to get to that point where your goals are in sight. If you execute the strategies well, you will achieve your vision.

A professional services firm might be entertaining 1, 2 or 3 or more strategies.  Each strategy will have a defined set of actions and milestones to pursue in order to execute the strategy.

Adopting strategies identify what you will set out to do.  It will also mean that most things outside of the strategy, you will NOT do.  Strategic drift is a killer.

Getting the picture?

  • So, what’s your strategy? Tell me it’s not an action list.
  • And how well do your strategies feature in your monthly management meetings?
  • Did you budget for the resources to execute the strategy?

With better focus, you can have a better business.  Don’t allow your great ideas disappear into a mosh pit of actions that are not co-ordinated towards a purpose.

Why should you have a strategy in place?

At pSE Advisory, we advocate that the leadership team should be asking ‘why’ more often.  An effective strategy can:

  1. Deliver more outcomes successfully.
  2. Create better business value.
  3. Make management enjoyable.
  4. Give you back time.
  5. Prevent misallocating precious resources – time, money, people.
  6. Make your practice a preferred place of employment.
  7. Make meetings more efficient.
